Very Dark ND Filters – the New Black

It seems that very dark neutral density filters are the photographic flavour of the month, and they sure are fun to play with.  With one on camera it’s possible to take slow speed shutter shots in broad daylight that can smooth out crashing waves or rippled water, and empty landmarks of people.

A few days ago I went mid-morning with a couple of friends and our dark filters to experiment with the ‘new black’ at Cleveland Point on Moreton Bay near Brisbane.  My filter is a 9 stop ND400 Hoya.  The gallery I’ve attached contains a few images taken that day.  The photos lend themselves well to black and white display and even though the morning lacked crashing waves, I’m hooked enough to think about starting a black and white album in my portfolio as I’m sure to produce many more over coming months.
